- Each season, NFL teams invest loads of time and money into their college draft picks. Some hit, and some miss. During the 2007 season, FG will track the progress of the top 5 offensive, and the top 5 defensive prospects. Some people will fall off, and some will rise onto the Rookie Watch list.
2007 NFL Rookie StandoutsBy: Trent Loomis FG Senior Writer
1. Adrian Peterson- Okay, let’s settle down here. After smashing Detroit in week 13 with 116 yards and a touchdown, Peterson had probably the worst game of his life. Even though the Viking beat the 49ers 27-7, Peterson had only 3 yards on 14 carries. To put that into perspective, Peterson is still averaging 6.1 yards per carry and although he now trails by Willie Parker by 17 yards for the NFL rushing lead, he has 108 less carries than Parker. He averages 109 yards per-game compared to Parker’s 94 and LaDanian Tomlinson’s 92. Peterson has three chances to run away with the rushing title with games against Chicago, Washington and Denver.
2. Marshawn Lynch- Lynch picked a perfect time to comeback on Sunday in a 38-17 victory over the Dolphins. Lynch racked up 107 yards to bring his season total to 858. Lynch is the second best rookie running back behind Peterson with 6 touchdowns it seems that whenever Lynch plays well, the Bills win.
3. Trent Edwards- It’s got to be a crazy year when two Bills rookies make the RWL, but Edwards put up big numbers (165, 4) in Buffalo’s big win over the Dolphins. Although he has 5 touchdowns and 5 interceptions this year, the Bills are 5-2 with him at the helm. It’s looking like Buffalo scored in the draft offensively like the Jets did defensively.
4. Dwayne Bowe- Although Bowe hasn’t had a breakout game since week 10, he leads all rookie receivers with 821 yards and 4 touchdowns. He had only 2 catches for 35 yards in a 41-7 loss to Denver Sunday. Bowe has a shot to be the only rookie to break 1,000 receiving yards. Let’s just hope that the Damon Huard/Brodie Croyle combo will be able to get him the ball.
5. Ted Ginn Jr.- Ginn has been one of the few bright spots on a bad Dolphins team. He has amassed 1,131 kick return yards to lead all rookies and place fifth overall in the NFL. Although he did lose a fumble on a punt return, Ginn had 51 kick return yards and 67 receiving yards in a 38-17 loss to the Bills Sunday. That gives Ginn 326 receiving yards and 191 punt return yards totaling 1,648 yards. Ginn has a chance to amass 2,000 yards.
