Bust Watch
Now before you get upset to find the future of your franchise on the newest bust list, remember that the four players that were under scrutiny in the beginning of the season now no longer find themselves on the list. Brady Quinn is sitting on the bench and learning from the breakout performance of Derek Anderson. Chris Houston has yet to make the big plays fans want from him but is making decent progress. And two of the players (Dwayne Bowe, and Aaron Ross) have been found on the top 5 offensive and defensive rookie lists respectively. So, maybe being on the list is good luck, and these four can work their way off by year's end. Until that happens, they will remain under the scrutiny of... THE BUST WATCH.
Gaines Adams (DE)- The hype was on for Clemson DE Gaines Adams coming into the draft. He was one of the 5 players invited to the draft and accordingly went in the top 5 when Tampa Bay called his name with the 4th overall pick. Then the stage seemed set for Adams to be an impact rookie as veteran DE Simeon Rice was let go before the season started. Now half way through the season, Adams has yet to earn a starting role in the Buccaneers defense. While used sparingly Adams has produced 1.5 sacks, but a top 5 draft pick is one that should be able to come in and produce full time. Adams may get his chance to work himself off this list before seasons end, but for now he is officially labeled a bust.
Craig Davis (WR)- It was no surprise that the San Diego Chargers selected a wide receiver in the first round. Having a productive receiving threat to go with Gates and Tomlinson would take the Charger offense to the next level. Unfortunately, after 8 weeks, it seems clear that former LSU wide receiver Craig Davis is not ready to be that guy. With 9 receptions for 84 yards and a single touchdown, Davis has done nothing to make the Chargers think twice about using next year’s second round pick to get veteran Chris Chambers from the Miami Dolphins. I told myself, after watching the first few Charger games, that I would never do it, but I am going to now refer to him as Buster Davis.
Jamaal Anderson (DE)- Maybe they fell in love with the name, but when the Atlanta Falcons drafted Jamaal Anderson out of Arkansas with the 8th overall pick in the draft, they were probably expecting more than the occasional tackle in his first 7 starts. The Atlanta Falcons have not gotten a single sack from the top ten DE and the team has only a lowly 9 sacks. Although Anderson does have 16 tackles, he has not been the answer to the other side of the line. The Falcons are currently ranked 23th against the rush, and 20th against the pass, and are getting very little help in either department from Anderson.
Robert Meachem (WR)- The biggest bust so far for the season has to be the 27th pick out of Tennessee, WR Robert Meachem. A first round pick is usually expected make an impact right away, and Saints fans had visions of a stretched field, and an exploding scoreboard the minute Meachem's name was called. Well, Meachem has yet to take the field this season. It is one thing to not make an impact your rookie year on a team that is full of greatness, but Meachem is currently behind a receiver who leads the league in dropped (see Devery Henderson), and the Saints got off to an 0-4 start looking completly hapless offensively for those four games. Now it is possible that Meachem will work himself into shape, learn the playbook, and start making his presence felt, but until then, he sure seems like a bust.
