A Big BCS Mess

ImageAfter a year when college football thought it had seen it all, Murphy's Law showed its face again, "Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong."  As the Pittsburgh Panthers were stunning the #2 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers, and the Missouri Tigers were being blown away by the Oklahoma Sooners for the second time, one could only reflect.

When the season opened with Appalachian State stunning Michigan, many literature "buffs," around the country could only laugh. Why? Only they could have considered the implications of the true to life concept of foreshadowing (when something seemingly unimportant shows itself early, only later to be the most vital piece, to a complicated plot).

After many years of BCS debate, controversy, confusion and outright disgust, the "crap" has finally hit the fan.

While the BCS "computers" try to figure out a way to fix this human problem, coaches across the country, sit in a state of confusion, all rightfully feeling that they deserve a shot at the national title.

Ultimately, if being the best is determined by regular-season records, then the BCS "computer" has one hell of a problem.

Hawaii (12-0), the only undefeated team in the country, is currently ranked 12th, by the "computer," and Hawaii currently has no shot at playing for a National Championship due to a "soft" schedule.

Les_Miles To make matters worse, there are currently two one-loss teams, Ohio State and Kansas, both 11-1.  During the season, Ohio State played only four ranked opponents, none of which were ranked higher than #21, yet Ohio State is being considered a lock for the BCS title game. Huh?

Meanwhile, Kansas has played against only two ranked opponents, but their only loss came against the Missouri Tigers , currently ranked #1 in the country (#4 at the time of the match-up). Kansas only lost to Missouri by eight points, 36-28. Nevertheless, Kansas is currently being deemed to have no shot at the title. Confused?

Yes, you should be. Hawaii, the only undefeated team in the country, and Kansas one of only two one loss teams, don't have a shot at the BCS title.

Where does that leave us? Yes, the two-loss teams.

There are currently ten, two-loss teams in the BCS top 25. As of today, #1 Missouri, #2 West Virginia, #4 Georgia, #6 Virginia Tech, #7, LSU, #8 USC, and #9 Oklahoma all have two losses. And, three of the two loss teams aren't even ranked in the top 10 (Arizona State #13, BYU #19, and Boise State #25), yet the Florida Gators, a three-loss team, is ranked #10. Any wrinkles in your brow yet? Just wait.

And if rankings mean anything, of these two loss teams, only Virginia Tech and Missouri can take pride in the fact that their team never loss to an unranked team.  All of the other two-loss teams, have been "upset", at some point during the  season, by an unranked team.

Making matters more complicated, LSU, one of the ranked teams to defeat Virginia Tech, defeated the Hokies by 41 points, yet "computer" ranks Virgina Tech ahead of LSU........Huh?? Wait, there's more.

ImageGeorgia and Kansas, also share an interesting similarity,  Both Kansas and Georgia are currently ranked ahead of their conference champions (Oklahoma and LSU).

Question:  How can a team be in the hunt for a national championship, without winning their own conference? Please send the answer to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it I'll be waiting.

Heres a simple suggestion, which I would like to extend to the BCS board, faculty, and their infamous "computer."

In efforts to solve the frustrations spread nationwide, amongst millions of well deserving fans, teams and coaches, I offer this advice. Take a few hundred dollars from your multi-million dollar budget, and instruct your BCS "computer" engineer, to program the word "playoffs" into its oh-so complicated hardware.  If that doesn't work, call me, I'll lay out a playoff system for you, free of charge.
